To My Mother, To My Father

By Emmanuel Williams

To my mother upon the Earth

I give you my body

I give you my human flesh

May you nurture what you can of me

To my father among the Sky

I give you my mind

I give you my every thought

May you bathe my empty spine

You are who I crave now

And evermore…

Who am I now?

A servant foververmore…

You have shown me

You have held me

I was alone

Until you came for me

I must be one of yours

I must belong to you

Mother Earth, Sky Father

Of those who belong to you

If you can move through me

Right now

What would you do?

Would you ride with me

Would I ride for you

Can we ride together

Odelay, Vamos, Vaminos

I would be your hijo

Your suavecito

The bachelor lost in the wind

And you that picked me up

Splashed me with your fragrance

Set me on your path

Gave me your coordinates

And I followed the harmony

Until it landed me among… you…

There is no scheme here

I followed God

He led me to the desert

Did you see me?

Did you scoop me up?

I am of Native Blood

I am part of those who cry

To the sky

To the sea

To the land

Upon our feet

Will you have me?

Brown skinned brotha

Soul aching other

But who is she?

Oh who is he?

She your girlfriend?

He your boyfriend?

She’s my mother.

He’s my father.

After my mother died

Then my father died

Who can I cling to?

Who will hear my crying?

Who will come to my aid?

Who will protect me?

It will not be you!

I have chosen my replacements!!

My spirit has a new home.

It may be given by Christian roots

But it rests in Navajo understanding

I cannot explain further.

Your path is not mine own…
