Moonlight: Till The Branches Do Break

By Emmanuel Williams

*

Oh moon, how thou dost please me

It is I you must know by now

Yet thou who musn’t ever know me

And you who will always entreat me

With tonight’s orange moonrise

On the first it be of May

The month of my birth

A flower you make of mey

*

Till the branches do break

With the creak of the autumn

Drifting past the summer’s ache

From the fire, from the water, I call them

Our seasons

Our reason

Our treason

Our being

*

You know me not, Selene

Though you seek me thus far, I admit

Doth thou seekest us all?

Like a deity tall?

With your lantern

You shine ‘cross the world

*

A smiling man?

A man in the moon?

He’d have to be sad and depressed.

*

But once the moon turns

You see her in earnest

A girl holding fast to her pail

This is Selene

Fair Artemis herself

True observers you would have to be

She shines pure benevolence

The throne she sits on

Yet stands as soon you will see

*

Wearing a dress

Or skirt

Made by craters

And a pail

Of the man’s left eye…

*

But enough about her

She is there every night

She will always shine light

But will never come forth

All you’ll see is the light

If your eyes have the might

*

Look behind…

*

Or maybe your lover

As you hold her beneath her

Will notice the girl

Holding constant her pail

Who will teach you

Instruct you

Correct your insight

*

Beware of May’s coming

For Summer is Coming

‘Cross meadow and rain

‘Twixt shadow and plain

Meet love, meet pain

Meet loss, meet gain

*

But the moon isn’t leaving

Unless it is time

For the moon to hide

And say it’s goodbye

The one that lasts long

That which watchers want gone

One that cannot be found

‘Til she comes back around

*

Like a girl grown woman

Her cycle is monthly

Thou shouldn’st be wary

She welcomes when waxing

*

But hold your girl closer

Celestial body

Warm up and unto you

A blessing of nights

*

Should this poem rhyme

Or giveth its truth

You are here for its beauty

And not for its youth

I leave you with much

For you must stay in touch

With the sky, every night

As you walk common dust

*

There is naught like Selene

Benevolence indeed

And splendor, yes splendor

Ancestors have sought

Though the night may be cold

Our moon is so old!

But deny her her light?

Yeah right!

Nothing like…

Moonlight…
