SVAB 2: Letter to Lestat

Dearest Lestat,

At this point, you’re probably worried about the mortal drug problem. I don’t blame you. I think about it here and there, but only significantly when I’m confronted by someone who can’t handle their dosage.

I could see if you took too much Ozempic and you ask your doctor quite plainly to end your frequent visits to the restroom.

That’s quite understandable.

But when your life becomes so overrun by a chemical or plant that you end up tossing decorum to the wind, and your clothes begin to stink from how long you’ve been strung out on the streets chasing your next high from room to room, alley to alley, and bridge to underbridge, then you’ve lost the fight for your own sanity. And are now a prisoner of the chemical or plant in question.

The chemicals are far more treacherous than the plants. Anyone can hallucinate on cannabis and come out of it in a couple days. The only excess possible there is the constant inhalation which leaves one so stoned that they cannot be lifted!

But the chemicals truly have a hold on our society. In every population in which the nervous system is altered by chemical consumption, there are those who turn our high style societies into eye sore villages of nomads. Some lost forever in the living tomb of obsession.

You know what I’m obsessed with, Lestat? Art.

The artistic endeavor.

Yes it has led me to my fair share of chemical intoxications. In fact, I haven’t turned down ethyl alcohol in years. But, oh, do I quake when I am without!

It is the only chemical of which I am happy to still enjoy.

For at the end of any human toil, there should be a drink to wash away the stress of the day…

Ever your servant,

Emmanuel Williams
