The Beholder’s Eye

By Emmanuel Williams

Beauty inspires desire

A woman’s beauty inspires possession

Her current lover sickens you

Any lover, really, that isn’t you

Then you finally do

The years of you two

The kindness, the sex, and conversation

The love, the debates… accusations

Then you are alone again

You struggle to find beauty desirable

And study those who possess it

Suddenly you want to recover faster

But all you possess is pain

Long pain

Broken pain

Crippling, tortuous, heartache

That’s how the beholder’s eye returns

The room carved out in your heart by the wound

The former erased, a vacancy now

A woman would fit well there, wouldn’t she?

Beauty inspires desire

A woman’s beauty inspires possession
